    Condition:

Water Damaged 1929 Rich. Lipp & Sohn 5'8'' Grand Piano

Damage Report : The following is the assessment of that damage.

    • Belly: The belly's principal components consist of the wooden back frame, cast iron plate, wrestplank and tuning pins, ribs, soundboard, and bridges and strings. The strings are oxidized from the high humidity exposure. There is some evidence of water that was on the soundboard. The most significant damaged occurred where water and humidity caused the soundboard to raise and crack in multiple areas and for separation to be caused in the layers of the rim. (See photos.) No work can be done on the piano until the rim is fixed to restore pianos stability! This level water and humidity exposure also causes the degradation of the unseen veneer layers in the pin block where the tuning pins are tightened and hold the strings. This can cause tuning instability.
    • Action: The action consists of approximately 6000 component parts. They are made from unfinished and unsealed maple, rosewood, mahogany, buckskin, steel pins and high quality felt.
    • The wood components of the piano and the attached felts and buckskin are glued with animal hide glues. The keys are made from unfinished spruce and have felt components. They will be affected by exposures of this type. There is conclusive evidence of water staining on the key bed which means that the water dropped between the soundboard and block and affected the action components in the bass section of the piano. (See photo) Multiple cracks have formed in the key bed due to this water/humidity damage as well. There is also misalignment in the wooden action components that has affected the touch of the piano. Action components come in matched sets so it will be necessary to replace the action stack on the piano.
    • Case goods: The piano is finished in lacquer and while there was some direct water damage that can be seen there is veneer separation on many parts of the case due to the high humidity the piano was exposed to. Due to this damage it is repairs will need to be made to veneers and case refinished.

The piano will require the following repairs to return the piano to return the piano to its original condition prior to the water exposure.

    • Belly: Remove strings, cast iron plate then scrape, shim, sand and seal sound board. Remove the wrest plank and refit and drill a new pin block, new 2/0 tuning pins (nickel plated) and new copper strings (Mapes Bass Strings) and treble wire. Repair separations in the pianos rim layers and epoxy to avoid further separation.
    • Action: Replace action stack only to include hammers, shanks and flanges and repetitions (due to the design and size of the repetitions it may not be possible to get a compatible replacement part for it, if this is the case the action will not be repairable.) Replace damper guide rail bushings, key bushings, and damper felts. Replace key tops and fronts or polish ivories if salvageable. Strip and re-felt key frame. Reregulate entire action including dampers. Tune and voice.
    • Case goods: Thoroughly clean, polish hardware and cabinet. Repair and refinish the case of the piano in hand rubbed satin finish.
